The Limousin Sunset - Autumn aperos at De Tout Coeur Limousin
Inspired by the seasons and my homemade plum liqueur.  This is a quick and easy Autumnal cocktail recipe - perfect for a little aperitif (apero) before dinner.  It would be an interesting addition to your Christmas and seasonal holiday celebrations too. The use of homegrown sage and seasonal local plums make this a delicious toast to the change of seasons here in the Limousin. Also a very tasty way of using up and preserving your plum harvest.  So sante, bottoms up and cheers!

The homemade plum liqueur would also make a lovely homemade seasonal or Christmas gift.

I hope you enjoy my Autumn cocktail - A Limousin Sunset.  What's your favourite seasonal aperitif?

Tips: you can of course use a shop bought plum liqueur if you'd like to try this cocktail before the homemade version is ready, but the homemade version is definitely worth the wait.

homemade plum liqueur
Inspired & adapted from Diana Henry's apricot liqueur featured in Salt, Sugar, Smoke (a 'go to' classic for interesting & delicious preserving recipes I can't recommend highly enough)

ingredients:

500g plums - halved & stoned
450g white sugar
750ml dry white wine
300ml vodka

method:
  1. Add the plums to a pan with the wine and sugar. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat & simmer until the plums are soft (about 10 minutes)
  2. Take off the heat & add the vodka
  3. Decant into a sterilized air-tight jar and leave to infuse for 1 week
  4. After a week strain the liquid through a jelly bag/muslin lined sieve
  5. Leave to mature for a minimum of 1 month.
