Sardine pate with lemon, gherkins and smoked paprika. One of my favourite things on toast - crunchy, spicy, zesty and a twist on the classic sardines on toast.
Cream cheese, oily fish and gherkins are a great combination. The sweet and sour gherkins add a lovely contrast to the fish. The smoked paprika, mustard and chilli add a little spicy heat too.
Serve on toast, crisp breads or as a dip with crunchy vegetables.
preparation time: 10-15 minutes
180g tinned sardines (2 tins)
150g cream cheese
zest & juice of 1 lemon
3-4 gherkins - finely chopped
1 heaped tsp smoked paprika
1 heaped tsp mustard (I used American style)
dash of Worcestershire sauce
ground black pepper to taste
1 chopped chilli (optional)
a few more chopped gherkins & smoked paprika
drain the sardines and add to a bowl and mash with a fork before adding in all the other ingredients. Mix well. Garnish with a few more chopped gherkins and a sprinkling of smoked paprika if liked.
